Paterson Inlet, Rakiura / Stewart Island

The name, Rakuira is usually translated to 'glowing skies', referring to the vibrant sunrises and aurora australis.  The island's English name, Stewart, comes from the first officer of a sealing ship, the Pegasus. Their visit in 1809 confirmed, for the English at least, that the land was an island rather than a peninsula.
