Part jam, part biscuit, all nostalgia (and a little bit of mystery).
At first glance, the Shrewsberry biscuit is part of a long history of treats dating back to the 1500s but these are usually lemon biscuits. In the UK, Burton’s Jammie Dodgers, first produced in 1966 is almost identical to our Shrewsberry.
You’d assume it was a tribute to the British treat, except the New Zealand National Library holds a photo of the Hudson’s Shrewsberry, dated 1964 - two years before the creation of Jammie Dodgers. So, was this jammie treat with a cut-out shape another NZ first or just a coincidence?
Regardless of the origins, leave at least three out this Christmas Eve.
