INHABITANTS, PART II: KAPITI ISLAND

The Whare, the oldest building on Kapiti Island dates back to the early 1860s when it served as the homestead for the McLean family, who farmed the island.

In 1897, the Government purchased much of the island to protect its natural heritage, and the Whare became home to several caretakers, including Richard Henry, the world’s first state-sponsored conservation officer. Today, it has been recently painted a stunning gold and red, iconic in the lush setting.
